Getting Help
The saying is true: No one is an island. There are times in all of our lives when we need help, and it’s a sign of strength, not of weakness, to recognize when one needs help and ask for it.
Fortunately, there are many sources of different kinds of help for retirees and older adults from both government and private organizations. Each state offers an array of services specifically for retirees and older residents. Individual states differ in the types of benefits they provide. However, every state has an agency dedicated to serving the needs of senior residents with home and community-based services. This page lists state resources that are available in each state.
Area Agencies on Aging
In 1973, an amendment to the federal Older Americans Act (OAA) required every state to form a separate senior services department and to designate Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) to implement programs and services for older Americans at the state and local level. Each local Area Agency on Aging serves a specific geographic area or county and implements the elder service programs in that area. In some states, the local office of the state senior services department serves the purpose of an AAA. AAAs are called Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) in some states.
If you want to know what services are available in your state, the easiest way is to contact your state’s Area Agency on Aging.
Senior Centers
Senior centers serve as a gateway to services for older adults—connecting seniors to vital community services that can help them stay healthy and independent. Depending on the state and the center, services may include: advocacy, counseling, employment assistance, educational seminars, transportation, health & wellness programs, information & referral, and recreational programs.
State Senior Services
Below is an alphabetical list of states. Below each state name are links to resources available in that state. The resources listed under each state are available to all residents state-wide.
